Desert Pictures
Finding good deserts to photograph is easy for us. Since we live in New Mexico all we have to do is drive south and west. Desert is a relative term; technically speaking Albuquerque is in the short grass prairie zone, but if you are visiting from the east it looks like desert.
As you drive south toward El Paso the elevation drops and the land gets more arid. Lots of creosote bush (Larria tridentata) appears and conditions get very harsh. This is Chihuahuan desert and does NOT have Saguaro cacti. We find it really annoying to see these cacti frequently used to illustrate advertisements for New Mexico businesses.
Saguaro cacti can not survive freezing temperatures. That means they can only live in the Sonoran desert which is in Arizona.
In March of 2010 we plan to take our new Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 megapoixel camera on a photography trip through Arizona. The goal is to use this new camera to load this and our other related websites with lots of great pictures and high definition video. We will be testing a system where we edit and upload new photos and videos while on the road.
